Sweaty Girl Skincare: A Simple and Effective Routine + Tips
At The Skin Room, we’re big fans of consistent exercise for mental and physical health. Even a few minutes of daily movement can help improve mood, boost energy, promote better sleep, and combat disease. Skin health is part of our overall health, and that’s where we come in! See our tips below to avoid breaking out while working out.
Pre-workout skin prep
Before you work out, we recommend washing your face and removing any makeup. Working out can cause excessive sweating and a buildup of bacteria and oil, leading to acne.
After you’ve washed your face with either water or a cleanser, we recommend putting on a hyaluronic acid serum or lightweight moisturizer (like SkinBetter's Trio Rebalancing Moisturizer) to keep your skin hydrated while you work out.
If you’re exercising outside, applying a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher is a good idea to protect yourself from UVA and UVB rays! We recommend a non-comedogenic SPF so that it won’t clog pores. We love SkinBetter's Tone Smart SPF 75!
Post-workout skincare routine
Exercise makes you sweaty! Washing your face with a gentle cleanser post-workout removes bacteria that can lead to clogged pores and acne.
Post-morning Workout routine
If you’re working out in the morning, you can apply your regular AM skincare routine after washing your face. Don’t forget to re-apply your SPF!
Post-evening workout routine
If you’re working out in the evening, you can apply your regular PM skincare routine after washing your face.
Active Girl Skin Tips
In addition to your pre and post-workout skincare routine, see our helpful tips below to avoid breaking out while working out:
Wash your hands before touching your face. Shared equipment means shared germs! Remember to wash your hands before touching your face to prevent acne-causing bacteria from spreading to your skin.
Ditch the workout gear. After you finish your workout, swap your sweaty clothes for clean clothes (including your sports bra)! This can help reduce back and chest acne.
Use a clean towel. Use a clean towel to wipe off sweat. This can help to prevent the spread of bacteria and oil. We recommend gently patting off sweat versus rubbing your skin.
Clean your yoga mat. Yoga mats can harbor bacteria which can cause acne and skin conditions like folliculitis. Clean your mat with a disinfectant and consider an essential oil (like lavender) for a refreshing scent!
